Google Nexus 5 Review

The Nexus 4 took Google to a new level in the mobile handset category. A great, slim, high performance device that sold for a mid-level price, it was also sold as is, that is, under no contract from a carrier. The phone was an international super hit. As with every great thing these days, the launch of its successor was awaited with baited breath. Now that we have the phone in our hands, let’s see if it lives up to the expectations.

Sleek Design:

The phone is quite sleek. Its looks are a bit understated; it’s looks nothing more than a slim well designed phone. Our test handset, which was the black coloured device, enhanced this feel with its all black tone. The phone has a uni body construction and is made of polycarbonate. The SIM card slot and power button are to the right of the phone while the volume rocker is to the left. It all makes for a phone whose basic functionality is quite high. It's surprisingly light, at only 130 grams and 8.6 millimetres thick. Overall, this phone just feels great to hold in the hand.

The Awesome Screen:

Google increased the size of the screen from 4.7 inches to 4.95 inches. It also uses Gorilla Glass 3 which gives ample protection against scratches and fingerprint smudges. The screen is a Full HD 1080p one. Clarity and picture density is amazing on the screen. With a high pixel density of 445 ppi, we’d expect nothing less. It’s great for reading text, playing games or watching a movie.

Camera:

These days, a high quality camera on a smartphone is pretty much a requirement. The 8 MP camera on the Nexus 5 takes quite decent photos when used with the auto settings. However, once you get a big deeper into the camera and adjust settings such as exposure and contrast diligently, the camera performs well. Low light performance isn't exactly poor, but again you need to manually tweak a few things to get the best out of it.

As far as videos go, Full HD 1080p videos look great. Again, low light performance isn't the greatest, but it’s acceptable. We do genuinely hope that the next camera software update that’s expected to roll out will fix this because the camera is quite frankly the weakest link in this fantastic phone.

Android 4.4 KitKat:

There isn’t a world of difference between KitKat and previous Android version. KitKat really is a solid improvement over earlier versions of the software, and the Nexus 5 shows it off quite well. Things like Messaging are now integrated with Hangouts that combine all of your messaging and chat under ine single hood. You can also now search keywords from within the phone dialer, which is a bit like having Google Maps business info integrated perfectly into the app. Also, the dialer has been completely redesigned. Icons and other symbols seem starker, cleaner, and larger and personally, we like it!

Processor and Performance:

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.26GHz, 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU, the Nexus 5 is like a supercar in world of phones. The device is astonishingly fast and games such Asphalt 8: Airborne which usually eat the processor run smoothly. Multi-tasking is an ease and we were astounded that the phone handled anything we threw at it with considerable ease. The phone comes with LTE and NFC and while LTE isn’t operational in India, NFC works like a charm.

Battery Life:

One complain about the Nexus 4 was that battery life wasn't that great. Google has bumped up the battery to 2300 mAH. However, battery life was rather inconsistent. We had varied battery life ranging from an entire day to a measly few hours. The screen takes up a huge chunk of the battery life and using it optimally is a great way to prolong battery life.

Verdict:

Overall, the Nexus 5 lives up to its expectations. Combining a great UI with some smartly designed features, the phone performs and exceeds expectations in many areas. KitKat looks fantastic too and the display is one of the best we've seen. The only downside was the less than stellar camera and rather inconsistent battery life. Apart from that, it’s one of the best phones money can buy.

Summary:

The Nexus 5 was one of the highly awaited phone launches of the year. After using it, we can see why. Intelligent design, a great display and a brand new version of Android make it one classy device.

Why does it make Sense switching to Nexus 5

Google finally announced the much awaited Android 4.4 KitKat release yesterday along with Nexus 5 handset manufactured by LG which went on sale in 10 countries (Great Halloween treat!). The initial handset inventory got sold off in 27 minutes flat, that goes to prove a strong potential Google has got for Christmas to compete with flagship phones from other companies.

More importantly Nexus 5 got listed immediately on Indian Play Store with a coming soon tag and priced at Rs 28,999 for 16 GB and Rs 32,999 for 32 GB version. Android ecosystem seems to be up for a major overhaul after KitKat OS announcement where Google intends to go with one single version of Android running on almost all devices post Jan 2014, which is a bold move and more concrete step taken to do away with Android OS fragmentation issues.

This does not warranty automatic upgrade for handsets with low configurations released earlier, however Android OS bandwagon would be less crowded post 2014 with version 4.4 targeting major share.

Manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, Sony and LG could be sweating over Nexus 5 soon as their current crop of flagship phones are going to be left far behind in terms of performance and pricing. Also being a stock Google device dependency of being at mercy of these companies to push across new OS upgrades that take too long also goes away.

There are rumors that Samsung may go for an early Galaxy S5 release next year to compensate for a less blockbuster response to Galaxy S4 sales, they have already announced that the next version of Galaxy phones would be based on 64 bit processing capacity and we may also see more RAM packed in OR better graphical processing power under the hood.

Samsung is not showing any signs of a shift in design, build and quality of it's Galaxy flagship phones. Note 3 is the only phone which comes with a different build quality now and TouchWiz OS gimmicks would continue to be offered as new features which most smartphone users do not actually use.

Both Sony and HTC has received decent response on Xperia Z1 and One phones which can provide them much required impetus to challenge Samsung's Android smartphone dominance in India.I am not sure how successful LG has being with G2 however Nexus 5 has got just the right pricing for Indian market which can boost prospects for this company next year.

Apple's iPhone 5C has got limited success until now where it has launched and 5S would be priced under premium category going beyond Rs 50,000 range as the case is with all new Apple iPhone's which get launched in India. I am doubtful how would Apple push their device adoption even with 5C (expected pricing around 41/42K) and EMI schemes across smaller cities and town in India?

Google device upgrades have being more balanced and well paced compared to yearly ritual now adopted by most companies, There's a limit to the upgrades we're going to see in smartphone hardware and software, and as the market saturates, the pressure to compete on price is going to become more intense. In such scenario a phone like Nexus 5 can be a value for money upgrade, which has got me planning to sell my S4 and go for this phone as it launches in India.

Would you go for Nexus 5 with the price it would be launched in India or prefer to wait for Galaxy S5 Or iPhone 5s, It would be interesting to read through your response on this.

Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Update

Android Jellybean 4.3 update is now available to download as OTA firmware upgrade on Galaxy S4 Exynos version in India.

Noticed some internal memory increase right after the update, possibly some bloatware may have got excluded.

Samsung browser now launches full screen by default with new tab interface, a new reading mode has being added when you pull down notification bar with two finger gesture, not sure which apps this mode would work with.

Display looks sharp and also spotted new Samsung keyboard interface, font looks slightly different on the keys, Touchwiz launcher shows less drag now.

User interface feels more smoother with noticeable icon enhancements, Knox security suite is available as an optional 171 MB install.

Would share impact on battery etc in a day or two, please check if you notice TRIM support improvement which benefited Nexus 7 users after introduction of 4.3 update on stock Google OS version.

Apple’s iOS7 reveal – was it really “iConic”?

Apple revealed a refreshed version of iOS 7 at the WWDC 2013 event on 10th June, enough to get social media channels buzzing again with views and opinions. Catching up to Android and also drawing inspiration from other mobile OS'es is clearly evident from this reveal and the new skin looks dressed up more like a bubble gum color scheme, this is what you can come up with Jonathan Ive? Head to mycolorscreen and you would see how creative people can get on Android. Apple’s iOS eco system does not offer even a fraction of such flexibility to fiddle with.

(Know more about how you can customize your Android phone here)

Taking a jab at Android’s fragmentation is becoming outdated debate, Android is available across multiple vendors on different handset models which have variety in phone specifications that allow Android’s penetration at so many price points.

You cannot run Windows 7 or Windows 8 smoothly on a Celeron processor today, there are so many customers across globe who still want to stick to Windows XP even after MS decided to phase out all support for this OS, what matters is even with that outdated OS the power of computing reaches out to so many people and same goes for Android, Would Apple allow a company like Micromax to port iOS on its low cost tablet and share profit’s with them? Answer is a clear NO. It is beyond logic to expect Jelly Bean to run on all Android handsets or tablets.

Apple sells just one iPhone which is always priced as a luxury product when a new one comes out, they found strong consumer base in US and European market and have being more or less happy with that maintaining their walled garden of iOS all this while.

Only recently Apple has started marketing iPhone strongly in India in partnership with local vendors, launching EMI schemes that have worked for this Cupertino giant, when it comes to product innovation Apple has got some breathing space to take a lead on Android as Samsung has stuck to just one design and look across its entire recent Galaxy series launch recently and there was no new Nexus device announced at Google I/O 2103 event.

While iOS 7 reveal was in progress, one could make out that next iPhone could very well come close to a 5 inch screen size and get little wider as well, which would prove to be a positive move, rumors are also floating about Apple launching a low cost iPhone which is very unlikely.

Anyways check JB OS7 skin made by a user – Shmogt, he has come up with a set of files which allow you to make your Android phone resemble iOS 7 (requires additional app downloads from Google Play to enable the entire look and feel), I have used theme pack files made available by this user and managed to get the iOS7 look on my Galaxy S4 (video clip below)

On a lighter note, here's a meme on what could have happened after the iOS 7 reveal

Samsung Galaxy S4 Arrives in India!

The most awaited smartphone of the year is out.And as we gear up for its launch in India on Saturday, 27th April. Here’s a sneak-peak into what you can expect of the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Screen
With a full HD 1,920 X 1,080 resolution, Super AMOLED display, 441 ppi high pixel density, everything looks sharp and more pleasing to the eyes. The screen can be operated by moving the finger even lightly on the surface. The S4 allows a user to operate some functions on the phone without even touching it. Gorilla Glass 3 is used to make the screen glass.

Design
This device is roughly as wide as S3 having dimensions at 136.6X69.8X7.9mm which makes it 5 mm longer and 1 mm thinner than its predecessor. The thin screen bezel imparts a wonderful look to the phone. It feels like the screen is pouring off the edge. With a thin air gap between the screen and the tough digitizer, the user feels that they are actually touching the screen instead of the glass on the top.

Performance
The phone is powered by an Exynos octo-core processor. With this processor, everything works extremely fast, opening and closing down of apps, browsing web pages, and games work in the blink of an eye. The battery is bigger than most smartphones available today as it has 2,600 mAh. It is efficient to provide power which suffices for all day long.

The 13 megapixel camera works well in low light with Backside Illumination (BSI) sensor along with a flash. The front 2 megapixel camera helps one to do video calling easily and S4 also provides the feature where the images from the front and rear camera can be superimposed.

The flagship smartphone from the kitty of South-Korean conglomerate, Samsung will be released in India on 27th April, 2013. This exclusive launch event organized by Reliance Digital, will be held in Shangrila Hotel in Mumbai. Bollywood heart-throb Ranveer Singh of Band Baajaa Baraat and Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl fame will unveil the device..Apart from being an actor;Ranveer Singh himself is a techno-geek who loves to use the latest devices and is updated about most technology advancements.

Google Play Books now available in India

{EAV:5c0cd17a1d66483b}
Google Play Books service is now available for India, you can download this app from Play Store to start using this service, Play Books app has interface similar to that of Play Store with option to view downloaded books in carousel mode or list mode.

You can download books from Play Store through various categories and scroll through popular titles, top free books etc. They have also included a link to section of books priced below Rs 100 visible on the Play Books main screen. This app does not have any option to import any books that you may already have on your android device, so you can use it only for reading books downloaded from play store.

You can keep the sync option on in case you want to read same book across multiple android devices, also use this app for offline reading allowing option to save book locally on your phone/tablet. This app has got 3D page turn effect, voice reading to choose from app settings. Pricing of books seems to be in line with Flipkart and Amazon kindle store.

With evolving market for online purchases in India, I hope Google Music also launches soon as iTunes from Apple also started allowing downloads in INR few months back, which is a good move from two major companies currently driving smartphone market across the globe gradually recognizing the potential of popularity of such services in India and giving consumers out here unified experience on their OS ecosystem which is enjoyed by consumers in most other countries.

ake a look at other screenshots of the app here, link to play store app here

Galaxy Note 8.0 launched at MWC 2013

Samsung has launched it's 8 inch tablet at MWC 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. It mark's entry of it's Galaxy Note range in tablet category moving up from the phablet series. Samsung already has Galaxy Tab in the 7 inch segment which has not garnered the level of popularity Galaxy Note was able to manage as a hybrid tablet/phone device.

In my opinion it could help Samsung gain a significant market share in the tablet category with the introduction of S-Pen with this tablet, as it comes loaded with 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS on TouchWiz interface, has 5 MP rear camera and a 1.3 MP front camera.

Body design follows Galaxy Note / S3 phone build, weighing at 338 grams and 7.95 mm thin. Would have being worth to launch this device with Exynos 5 processor, however it comes with 1,6GHz Exynos 4 Quad Core Processor, has 2 GHz RAM, 16/32 GB Sotrage along with Micro-SD card slot for expandable memory, 1280 x 800 display at 189 ppi which is higher than that of Apple at 163 ppi, along with 4,600 mAH battery which should provide decent usage for this device.

No Official word on the pricing yet by Samsung, expect it to be available in the range of INR 25,000 - INR 27,000 considering additional calling ability available with the tablet

I was surprised to know that at this screen size level, Samsung has not shyed away from offering calling feature on this tablet which is also present in Galaxy Tab, pretty bold move. Do you think Galaxy Note 8.0 would act as a game changer in the tablet space for Samsung to fight it out with iPad mini and maybe surpass the popularity enjoyed by Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 in the Android arena?

Chevrolet Beat 2013 launch campaign

Chevrolet is running an ad campaign for promoting the launch of 2013 Spark, branded as Beat in India. Hatchback cars are not so popular in USA, however the launch campaign seems pretty impressive and General Motors seems to have designed the ad campaign as "we are importing our export" and loved by lot of car enthusiasts, I can certainly vouch for that claim!

Check out this infographic which compares Chevrolet Spark with a mid sized 1973 sedan from USA, which is an attempt to change the image of "bigger the better" which applies to car buying trend which consumers in USA have stuck to for quiet long time.

I saw another promotional content on GM Canada portal which reads as "The World through the Windshield of a Mini-Car" which has a high-res image outlining global presence of Chevrolet's Spark in various countries. Link to this page here

I liked the front grill design of the 2013 Spark and the infotainment features that come equipped with the new model brings in additional appeal to the futuristic design of this car which is still fresh, hope Chevy thinks about a pepped up version for Indian markets to soon, and yes the new alloys are definitely drool worthy.

Battle of Tech Giants: Is it Over?

A court room dispute that remained on top of the technology news marquee for few weeks now has finally come to an end with the verdict landing in favour of Apple, indicating that Samsung indeed was found breaching some patent rights, a sea of opinions and views have flowed in after this news came out.

Apple saw this judgement as an acknowledgement to the fight they have put up against not just Samsung but also with Android as an OS. Samsung commented on this verdict echoing a sympathetic sentiment indicating this was going to be a loss to consumers in the long run.

When I brought Apple iPad 2 on it's launching day in India last year, I was still stuck with Symbian OS on my Nokia N8 phone, my tryst with android had not begun yet. I felt there could be nothing better than this product in tablets for few years at least even if other manufacturers kept playing the catch up game, iPad is still ruling the tablet market, when I got my Samsung Galaxy SII, my experience with android began on sour note as I was still getting used to common pitfalls of switching to android like draining battery, phone heating up etc., however using an android phone made me realise that apple's iOS ecosystem was not suitable to my needs.

I am a heavy user of social media tools, curating web content on the go, blogging and a taste for sharing stuff around art and design because of which I view my mobile as an extension to my computing experience and I expect a portable device like a tablet to meet some of these requirements if not all, I started experiencing suffocation in Apple's walled garden, it feels good to stroll there for a while but very soon you realise that you are missing a bout of fresh air and I took the exit route as my iPad started gathering dust and I was hooked on to my Galaxy SII.

I agree to some extent on Apple's theory to limit data transfer options on their devices, allowing app downloads only via iTunes and other limitations put in place to minimize malicious content damaging portable computing devices. Google's play store is well known for housing malicious apps which raises data security risks. I missed some of the key features in iOS which I found useful on android like customization of home screen, ability to connect wireless/bluetooth mouse, ease of working with data/file transfer, some limited use of eye candy options like live wallpapers. Managing content curation was limited to few social apps in iOS, luckily by the time I started using my Galaxy Note after moving on from SII, app exclusivity started diminishing and we saw some famous apps like Instagram and Flipboard getting ported on Android this year.

In my opinion Apple started a revolution in mobile technology beginning with simplification and took a big leap forward on mobile OS interface and hardware design, while most mobile manufacturers were busy sticking to Symbian and Java based OS's banking heavily on the megapixel mania, producing Walkman phones etc. Apple actually brought smartphones to the right track when everyone else realized the need of the hour was to work on producing useful apps, It made some companies re-think their strategies from the scratch, a lot of them simply started copying Apple's approach towards mobile phone and tablet market growth.

At this stage of the lawsuit verdict coming out, I feel in the past 2 years Apple is still stuck to the guns it has being blazing all along, while Samsung has being riding high on the Android bazooka gnawing away significant share of the USA mobile OS segment, profitability still does not look good in comparison to what Apple is earning, probably Apple may be working hard in the background to maintain the momentum it has gained in all these years with no visible threat to iPad supremacy yet, It had to ensure other manufacturers did not dent their market share further because Google has being providing the right ammunition to mobile companies at all price segments, thus legal swords were just waiting to come out in the open.

Latest news on this feud is that Apple is going to demand ban on sales of Galaxy Note and Galaxy SIII in US, which indicates the so called 'Thermonuclear' battle against Android is not over yet.

Samsung and Google with other Android manufacturer's would definitely have to play safer with OS interface design, product features and hardware design, however I am still baffled on the logic of patents being awarded to Apple which kill competition threat up front and promote monopolistic advantage for a company, take a look at this clip from Matrix Revolutions and imagine Neo to be either Samsung or any other Android vendor and Agent Smith playing Apple, Google as the Deus Ex Machina. Maybe Samsung would have to wait for it's "it is done" moment. I thought of making this as a video meme, however it is best left to your imaginations!

30 year old woman, trapped in a body of 9 year old

If you thought something shown in the movie Curious case of Benjamin Button as a human could not exist, you would be wronged by the condition in which a Brazilian woman Maria Audete do Nascimento has being living for the past 30 years of her life trapped in a body of a 9 year old. She is living in Ceara, Brazil with her step mother and father. She suffers from hypothyroidism which could have being reversed during her childhood that would have allowed normal development of her body and mind.

University of Ceara has offered help to this family to assist Maria in developing her walking, sepaking skills also helping her learn feeding self which would enable Maria to lead a little independent life, it's really painful to see her in such condition whereas the family has happily accepted it as a god's will for them to be of some service to her.
