Degrading Journalism

Journalism in our times has changed a lot, watching DD news was painful and so is watching plethora of news channels today, resorting to cheap and sensational journalism to increase their TRP, the same goes for some newspapers as well.

The BPO industry is the latest victim of media attention, in fact has being for quiet some time, news channels and newspapers have left no stone unturned to paint this industry in a grey shade, Youngster’s earning more money are bound to use it for satisfying their personal needs and desire, it could be taking drugs, partying, booze, spending on white goods, using plastic money and more, I fail to understand that why does the BPO industry be blamed of this changing social set up in our country.

I agree to the incident which happened with the lady employee of Wipro BPO in Pune was gruesome and definitely BPO companies need to step up security measures for female employee’s, however I read a news article in a gujarati daily with a title “Call center girls have become prostitutes”, I fail to understand what are we trying to prove to our society by adopting to such sensational journalism. These kinds of news articles are enough for conservative parents to stop a girl or a lady from working in a BPO company.

The article which I read was trying to prove that girls who join BPO companies tend to get indulged in flesh trade, to match up to peer pressure, their spending habits, which is not the case always it also depends a lot on your upbringing and other social factors, these type of incidents happen in aviation industry, fashion and entertainment industry as well because today’s next gen women are sexually liberated and they don’t require a BPO industry to take their path to sexual liberation, a housewife watching “K” series soap opera’s on television equally can turn the tables around in her martial life.

The same gujarati daily also came up with an article in bold lines, explaining the phenomenon of rising instances of sex sans emotion, commitment which is popular in western countries known as “FB”, this news daily was trying to prove that our society is degenerating morally, yes it is, but we cannot stop this from happening because after reading such articles some of their readers may start practicing what they read, while some may crib about it and forget it, because what could be immoral for me could be perfectly moral for another person, it’s difficult to define moral behaviour in today’s changing social behaviour of the youth in our country.

Barring few good News channels the balance pack of news channels have all the time to put loads of animation, sensational music, Ekta Kapoor style 3 time frame repeat to show sensational news, showing programs on astrology, ghost stories, debate shows, late night phone call shows with so called “experts” answering sexual queries of viewers, exposing flesh trade scams, one can watch all kinds of X rated stuff on these channels which ideally is not supposed to be broadcasted.

I feel in the name of journalistic liberty our news channels think they can broadcast any damn thing to show the viewers “Reality as it is”, Sex sells and that’s definitely a golden goose for the media industry, but please don’t taint industry like BPO to be a place of prostitutes, spoilt brats, overspending youth. There’s more to this industry which is no where highlighted in media, so if you can’t highlight the bright side, don’t try showing the dark side of this industry.
